Contactless giving feels like magic. A donor holds a card or phone near a device, it beeps, and the gift is made. Understanding the basics helps when you are comparing devices, because not all contactless hardware is built to the same standard.

What actually happens in a tap

NFC lets two devices exchange information over a very short distance, usually a few centimetres. When a donor presents a card, phone or watch, the donation device and the payment instrument hold a brief, encrypted exchange that authorises the gift.
